Update, April 28, 2012

Dear friends,

Yes, we know it's ridiculous. No one is more upset at the situation than us, believe me. You have lives outside flight sims. You have jobs, you have homes. For us, Cliffs of Dover is our life. When we can't get it right, it hurts us. When we are in the constant state of "almost ready", when we break promises week after week, it affects us very deeply.

Unfortunately, even though it looked like we had something releasable this morning, by lunchtime we felt we should work on it more. What we almost released would have been a "DX10 alpha". All the FM changes are there, lots of other great things, FPS and stability improvements, etc.

However, the things that are the current "known issues" are:

· No dynamic low-caliber hit decals showing on aircraft;
· Detached aircraft chunks losing their texture and becoming pitch-black;
· Little particle "dust" that comes out of weapon hits looking like untextured squares;
· Gunsights always white in color;
· No waypoint lines rendered in map or FMB;
· Pilot and Plane models not rendering textures in Options - Pilot and Options - Plane respectively;
· DX9 support not ready for public consumption.

We just felt that this was one known issue too many. The decision was very hard to make. Many team members are unhappy with it, especially those responsible for the parts of the patch that are fully tested and working such as the FM.

I believe however that, rather than presenting ourselves as a team that releases half-finished patches with lots of graphic issues, we should work very hard on building the reputation for making things right, the first time, however long it takes.

We’ll keep providing regular reports.

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31450

Today,

Thursday, May 10, 2012. Patch Alpha – Report 1
Patch Alpha – Report 1

Hi everyone,

First of all, we’d like to thank everyone who’s sent their crash logs and suggestions to the team. Your help is extremely valuable, and we really do appreciate it. We know how dedicated and thorough our fans can be, and it always raises our spirits to see all the effort and time you put into helping us make our sim better.

As most of you know – and we should have mentioned it when releasing the patch – all of Russia was on official holiday for four days. Most of the programmers took some much needed rest and are just now starting to sort through the bugs. Over 500 emails with reports and suggestions were sent to Luthier’s email over the holidays. He sorted through every single one of them and relayed everything to the appropriate team members, but if your email contained a question or a suggestion that requires someone else to investigate, it may take a little while to get a response. Ilya wants to apologize to everyone now if you do not receive an immediate reply. Your email does get read, and gets looked at very carefully, especially if it contains crash logs or dumps.

With that, we do have to respond to a few of the more common responses to the alpha patch.

1. “Why are my graphics busted?”
We did not reduce any graphics in the game! We did not resize any textures, redo any models, or anything like that! Also, in its current state, the graphics engine does not produce different FPS depending on texture resolution. You can very easily check the fact by watching the FPS counter as a plane’s external texture loads while the game is paused.
We’re simply ironing out some quirks with the texture manager in the current pre-release version of the patch. It’s been rewritten in order to reduce stutter. It no longer freezes the game when a large number of new objects have to get loaded with their textures, but it’s still imperfect. Lower res graphics are a temporary non-intended side effect.
We never ever tried to improve performance by decreasing the visual quality of the game.

2. “Fix your damn game! “
This is, after all, an alpha patch that was released with many known issues clearly listed, and the main purpose of the release was stated as locating and fixing crash bugs. We’re sorry it’s been frustrating. The remaining crash bugs are hard to catch, which is why we’re actually glad it’s been crashing for you. Yes, I said glad.
It’s been crashing for us too, and in a way that makes it impossible to catch the exact culprit. The crash needs to happen in a very specific rare way to point out the root cause. We need to get that specific crash report to fix it. We’ve got a few hundred crash dumps to look through now, so chances are, one of them should contain the smoking gun.
And, returning to the common thread in some of the responses – we are fixing it! That’s exactly what we’re doing right now! And you are helping!

Again, we do apologize if you are one of the people for whom the game crashes a lot. Remember – this is a pre-release test version of the patch, and you are not required to use it at all! Please roll back to the previous more stable version if you want to continue flying while we continue working.

Now we’re going back to work. We’ll release a status update by Saturday.

Friday, May 25, 2012. Report 3
Dear friends,

No mini patch today.

We're working along the following lines:

* Obviously, fixing all reported issues encountered during testing.
* DX9 support
* Completing all other incomplete graphics and performance improvements

We're also working through an unexpectedly large volume of reported issues with the flight model.

The next version of the patch, which will take a bit more work, will contain all of the above. We'll keep you updated.

Thank you again for your tireless efforts in helping us make the game better.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Update, June 01, 2012
Good day everyone!

We continue to work on the patch. We’ve just completed all scheduled tasks dealing with performance improvements and will start on the list of various graphics glitches tomorrow. We’re also continuing to work on improving aircraft FM and system modules. These tasks will take at least four days, meaning we won’t being internal testing until next Friday at the earliest. If the internal test version is good and stable, it won’t take too long after that to release it to the public.

We also continue to introduce you to aircraft from our future not-yet-announced project. The official announcement is just a few short weeks away. Until then, we won’t be able to provide more details and answer specific questions, but please rest assured we aren’t in any way shape or form planning to move away from our reputation as the most realistic WWII sim on the market.

The plane we’re showing today is the famous Soviet LaGG-3 fighter that bore the brunt of the fighting alongside the I-16, Yak-1 and the MiG-3 in the most difficult early years of the war. Opinions on its quality differ greatly, however this forefather of the fearsome Lavochkin line of fighters remained in service with the Soviet VVS until the very end of the war.

(This screenshots from the special "viewer" and not the actual game engine).

Friday Update, June 08, 2012
Good Morning!

We’ve completed most of the outstanding tasks this week, most importantly fixing most serious issues and speeding up the graphics engine. The game is now even faster, and the FPS slow-downs have been reduced even further. We are currently testing the new version and fixing various small issues as they are discovered. A public version of the new patch will not be ready before next Wednesday even if everything goes extremely well.

We’d also like to describe the work performed with the FM this week in more detail:

· Added new Hurricane Mk I and Spitfire Mk I variants with constant speed propellers and fuel tanks filled with 100-octane fuel. Older 87-octane variants also remain available. (Please note that the new planes use existing cockpits, so the boost indicator gauge shows new extrapolated values)

· Corrected (increased) low-altitude airspeeds for RAF fighters.

· Corrected Bf-109 rudder model, making it more effective to allow real-world maneuvers to be performed with just the rudder pedals.

· Corrected fuel model for more realistic gas mileage.

· Increased drag created by the radiator.

· Corrected throttle control model; now the entire range is used.

· Corrected flap sounds for the Bf-109.

· Corrected the pitot heat light on the Bf-109.

· Corrected the overspeed sound for aircraft; the sound will now increase in volume gradually and depend on airspeed.

Finally, as we approach the official announcement of the upcoming project, we continue to showcase the aircraft you will get to fly there. Today we’re showing the model of the Soviet Petlyakov Pe-2 bomber for the first time. This venerable aircraft fought with the Soviet VVS throughout the war, going through numerous improvements and modifications. Despite its many shortcomings it continued to play a more important role than its more refined successor the Tu-2 all up to the final days of the way.

We’d like to note that the screenshots are not taken in-game but rather in the internal model viewer app.
