RoF has different sets of aiming help: a bomb aiming help, some red-circle deflectionshot help, reargun aiming help reticle and an aiming help for all handheld weapons (pistols, flares)
before the last patch, they ALL could be switched off. That was changed with the last patch.. where the bomb help was tied to mousecontrol.. ie: switching on mouse control allowed to cheap on full realism settings.. so because of complaints, that was then fixed in an HOTFIX (1.035b) among other things...
the problem with that, was that it introduced new settings effects. RoF now has 2 setting switches for aiming help (one serverside/in realism settings) and one in flight... but none affects the reargun aiming help or the flare/pistol aiming help, sooo these two are not any longer switchable but forced on all players...
and it seems like a DESIGN DECISION more then an error in the chaotic rewiring of what the two switches toggle:

another thing that is debatable in terms of wisdom of dealing with a typical flightsim customer base is that the gui-screen overlay with compass, clock and engine settings (for those without track-ir and the likes) was also changed and even though many hard core simmers frown the use of that overlay, it should at least be correct.. but especially the "realistic setting" one is not, swichting out the airplane compass for a hand held infantry compass where the red needle end instead of poinint north point true course (TC) and the other GUI elements introduce a harder-to-read design.
So basically, the idea of having flight sims open up to larger audience with switchable complexity (which is a use full one) is done here in bad way, as it neither really makes getting into the game easier (mouse control works terrible, it is an ai-pilot flying your plane to a cursor, you are not controling the control surfaces) nor the gui or settings more transparent and more accessible while at the same time giving the finger to the hardcore sim fans..
so it is shooting your own business into the foot or both feet, if you so will.
Because of mainly real life constraints but also the whole attitude of the last patch + how it was comunicated, I have de-installed the game and moved on to other things. It did not motivate me to play or buy stuff there anymore, frankly.
