Spitfire designer R.J. Mitchell initially trained as an engineer with a locomotive firm in the Midlands before entering the aircraft industry. During his seventeen years with Supermarine he was responsible for the design of twenty-four different types of aircraft.

By mid 1942 it was obvious that the Mark V could not compete successfully with the new German Focke Wulf FW190, - the ‘Focke Wulf Scourge’ as the period was known. With the new Mark VIII still over a year away a ‘quick fix’ option was to put the new Merlin 60 series engine with its 2 stage, 2 speed supercharger into the existing Mark V airframe. This involved building a longer nose to accommodate the longer Merlin, two radiators to handle the additional heat of the more powerful engine, and a larger rudder surface area to balance the power. This was achieved at short notice and proved very capable against the FW190.
The Merlin 60 series engines (Merlin 61 / 63 / 64 / 66 / 70 ) gave up to 1720hp. Various gun arrangements with the later ‘E’ wing giving 2 20mm cannon and 2 50 cal machine guns.
A total of 5665 Mark IX’s were produced. What had been intended, as a stopgap measure became a standard.
