*THIS IS BOMBER NIGHT*
This mission is a very special Korean War Bomber Night, called "Skyraider Salute BN".
The Douglas Skyraider is the focus of this mission. Due to UP3.0 limitations, I had to use a Vietnam Era version of the Skyraider. The Skyraider is a MONSTER plane, with incredible ordinance-carrying capabilities. (Although, I warn you that it is also a lumbering beast when heavily loaded after take-off - use 50% fuel).
This mission focuses on Operation Strangle, an interdiction campaign from summer 1951 through early 1952 intended to cut off supplies to the frontline North Korean and Chinese troops. It was named after a similar campaign during World War 2 in Italy. The KTO Operation Strangle involved attacks on trains, railways, bridges, roads, and vehicle columns. Although lots of damage was caused by the aerial attacks, the operation was later viewed as unsuccessful, since the enemy divisions actually could survive with a much lower level of supply than originally estimated by the Americans (shades of Vietnam).
F-86 Sabres will be the escorts. They should take 100% fuel and/or drop tanks. Otherwise, they will probably run out of fuel during escort. MiG-15s are the defenders. Escorts and defenders are both unlimited in number. As a hint, once up to speed, cut the throttle back to 60-65% in a jet, and you can usually maintain your speed while significantly reducing the fuel consumption.
The targets are moving vehicle columns on coastal road running between AP16 and AX13, and a train on nearby railway. The other set of targets consists of moving vehicle columns on mountain road running between BD20 and BA13. When I saw "vehicle columns", there are many large vehicle columns on each route. In short, they keep coming.
I know it's MiGs v Skyraiders, but the Skyraiders have the advantage of slow speed and maneuverability, along with a heavy punch of firepower if they can get a bead on a MiG. Plus the Sabres should be providing cover.
The northernmost MiG base is unusual, to say the least. It appears to have several rises/ramps in the runway due to terrain features. I was able to take off and land with a serious problem, though (MiGs have a short roll). Due to RC3 limitations, the human pilots have Soviet markings (as opposed to being Soviet "volunteers" in NK markings); that's fixed in RC4.
Some screenshots are included below. Please note that, despite the mission layout screenshot, at the last minute I changed the Red bases somewhat, and now there's another Skyraider base at Seoul, and the bomber base is now a Sabre base.
Please fly and enjoy, and let me know any comments you might have.
